Respite Support for Carers

Supporting carers to access respite, guidance, and practical help so they can take time to rest and recharge.

What is Respite Care?

Respite care provides short-term support so carers can take a break while the person they support receives safe and appropriate care. This could be for a few hours, overnight, or longer periods — giving you time to rest, pursue interests, or attend to your own needs.

Understanding Carer Support

If you care for someone, you may be entitled to a Carer's Assessment through your local council. This helps determine the support available to you, including respite care, funding, or additional services. An assessment considers how your caring role affects your wellbeing and daily life.

How to Access Respite Support

A step-by-step guide to getting the help you need

Step 1: Carer's Assessment

A carer's assessment considers how your caring role affects your wellbeing and daily life. It helps determine the type of support you may be entitled to, such as respite breaks, practical help, or equipment.

If you live in Bolton: Contact the Early Intervention Team or visit Bolton Council's Adult Social Care webpage.
If you live elsewhere in Greater Manchester: Contact your Local Adult Social Care Team. Carers Manchester can offer guidance if you're unsure who to speak to.

Step 2: Assessment of the Person You Care For

To access respite services, the council may also assess the needs of the person you care for. This helps decide whether they are eligible for funded care while you take a break.

Step 3: Funding Decisions

If eligible, the council may offer:

  • A personal budget for you as a carer, which can be used for breaks or wellbeing support
  • A care plan and funding for the person you care for, which may include respite stays

You may choose how to use this support or ask the council to manage it on your behalf.

Step 4: Arranging Respite

Once funding is agreed, you or your social worker can contact an approved provider, such as our service. We will plan a stay that meets both your needs and those of the person you care for.

Our respite service is based in Bolton and welcomes referrals from across Greater Manchester.

If There Is No or Limited Funding

If you are told funding is unavailable, you still have the right to an assessment. You can request a review or appeal if your situation changes. Some carers choose to self-fund additional respite to maintain their wellbeing.

We understand that navigating funding can be challenging. Our team is here to help you explore all available options and find the right support for your situation.
