How to Access Respite Support from your Local Authority

Carer's Assessment

A carer's assessment considers how your caring role affects your wellbeing and daily life. It helps determine the type of support you may be entitled to, such as respite breaks or practical help. Contact your local authority to request support from the Carer Support Team.

Assessment of the Person You Care For

To access respite services, the council may also assess the needs of the person you care for. This helps decide whether they are eligible for funded care while you take a break.

Funding Decisions

If eligible, the council may offer a personal budget for you as a carer, or a care plan and funding for the person you care for, which may include respite stays.

Arranging Respite

Once funding is agreed, you or your social worker can contact an approved provider. We will plan a stay that meets both your needs and those of the person you care for.
